Let's talk Trades...

All star weekend is a distant memory, the trade deadline has passed, players are in their new uniforms, ...now what does that mean for the rest of the season?

These recent mid season trade moves were probably the most notable and exciting to talk about this season.  The NBA definitely shocked bball fans with the amount of key players being reassigned.

So what does this mean?

1.  The East is stronger than ever!
After that loss in the All Star game many were doubting the power that the East possessed.  Well not any longer.  The East is now back to being the powerhouse it once was.  With Deron Williams, Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups all moving to the East, the West no longer looks like the powerhouse conference it has been in the past few years.  Who knows if many of those teams will win at least 50 games this season.

2. The Celtics have to rebuild their chemistry.
I don't think any Celtics fan or Hater understood what Ainge was thinking when at last minute the C's ended up in trade talks.  I, for one, was sure that the Celtics, like the Lakers, were going to keep things as is.  Basketball as usual, but nope Ainge decided to make it business as usual and get rid of Perkins! NO say it ain't so.  The intention behind it makes sense but the timing was all wrong. Yes the Celtics need to start thinking about a future beyond this season, yes Perkins is banged up, yes the Celtics needed more depth and offense (ok maybe this trade was smart Ainge has done a great job making the smart moves and getting necessary players)  However, Perkins made a significant difference in the paint with his size and defense.  He is banged up but still delivers when needed.  Who will the C's turn to when playing the Magic or the Lakers?    Perkins has been with the Celtics for about 7 years; this is where team loyalty comes back into play.  One thing about the Celtics that I always love to watch is their TEAM unity you could always tell they are a real family over there.  So when a trade of this caliber happens it's not Basketball as usual for them.  Garnett said it best, ""It's not even about a teammate,"  "You feel like you lost a family member
today. Tough day."  To play Devil's advocate and not speak from the heart, Perkins turned down his contract extension because he probably was interested in making those big bucks, Jeff Green is not a bad pick up and neither is Kristic and the key thing is that the Celtics were 33-10 without Perkins in the beginning of the season and 4-3 with him as a starter and like I mentioned before he is not completely healthy.  I guess this is why Ainge has that job and not me.  He is making sure the C's stay a contender way passed the Big FOUR. We will see what the Celtics do from here on out.

3. The path to the NBA finals is not so crystal clear anymore at least in the East.
Bulls, Heat, and Celtics all have powerhouse teams and the only one of those teams that took a hit with these trades is the Boston Celtics.  Not to mention Orlando, Atlanta and the Knicks not being too far behind and if the Knicks can build their chemistry faster than the Heat did they are going to play a significant part in who ends up where in the post season.  The  top teams in the West ,on the other hand, have it a little easier.  Although the West's stock dropped significantly the Thunder increased their stock by acquiring Perkins from the Celtics.  They now have legitimate size to contend against the top teams in the West.

I must say this has been an exciting NBA season thus far and these trades make you understand why players make demands the way they do and why Lebron made his moves the way he did (yeah I can't believe I am taking some of the heat off him; no pun intended).  In the end it's all a business and loyalty means nothing in the NBA unless the business side of things is in order.  It should be exciting to watch these teams go head to head from here on out especially in the East.

For those of you still trying to keep up with who went where here is a quick summary to help you out:

Bobcats' Wallace goes to Trail Blazers
•
Celtics send Daniels to Kings

 Rockets' Brooks traded to Suns
 Thunder trade for Nazr Mohammed
 Rockets' Battier traded for Thabeet
Cavs get Erden, Harangody from Celtics
Celtics trade Perkins  and Robinson to Thunder
Clippers' Davis to Cavs for Williams and Moon
Hawks ship Bibby to Wizards for Hinrich
Warriors, Nets make trade for Murphy
 Hornets land Landry from Kings
Deron Williams goes to New Jersey
Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups to the Knicks
James Johnson traded to Raptors .

Enough trade talk let's get back to Basketball as usual!

Listen Melo we know how building up the hype and holding out to the last milli second can back fire! Let's make moves and get back to playin' ball!!!

If you don't want my opinion I'm going to give it to you anyway.  Both the Nets and the Knicks have to give up a Hell of a lot for Carmelo Anthony, in my opinion too much.  Carmelo is going to the Knicks point blank period.  Despite the fact that I think it is a bad move to give up my boy Felton, the Knicks are going to make it happen.  I despise mid season trades I think it breaks up TEAM unity (in case many have forgotten this is a team sport and no one man is doing anything) and it just takes away from the game.

The only way I think this would be a worthwhile trade for the Knicks is if they end up with Billups.

All Star Weekend has wrapped up we laughed, relaxed and now it's time to get back to business.  It's Monday and Carmelo and the Knicks front office need to make that announcement already.  There is basketball to be watched, but if Lebron's summer circus is any indication of how this trade will go down, we will be waiting until Thursday to hear any decision.  Because as Melo put it in an interview during the All Star Game, "We play Memphis on Tuesday, I'll be there..."

Let the circus continue...

Lil Kim - Black Friday (Nicki Minaj Diss) [OFFICIAL VIDEO]

Lil Kim is selling her mixtape, Black Friday, for $9.99 and is claiming to have sold 113,000 mixtapes in just 28 hours.  Hmmm... mixtapes are usually free and album sales are at an all time low; that's an impressive number.   Lil Kim skeptics aren't believing these numbers.  I guess we won't know until the numbers are verified (if that happens).  Until then enjoy the vid...

Valentine's Day...to celebrate or not to celebrate

The vote for whether you celebrate Valentine's Day or not is a deadlock.  Many people love this day (specifically females) because it's a day they get balloons, chocolate, etc. and their partners have no choice but to go all out to express their love (or lack their of).  Then there are the other people that despise this so called holiday because as they claim; "It's so commercial", "I don't need a special day to express my love".  Blah Blah Blah.  Those tend to be the people who don't have that special someone or that don't like going all out for their significant other, or are married and feel that any holiday is overrated.

Well here are my three cents:

WHO CARES!!! I think that everyday should be an expression of love to your friends, significant others, family and shoot even your enemies (Keep your enemies even closer). Any holiday or special day that we celebrate should be something that is celebrated everyday, i.e. Christmas-we should celebrate the birth of Christ everyday, Birthdays-we should celebrate someone's presence on Earth everyday, Thanksgiving-we should be thankful everyday.  Do you tell your kids Christmas is overrated, or Thanksgiving? With that said yes we know we should do these things everyday but sometimes as human beings we get caught up in the hustle and bustle of our daily lives and forget to slow down and smell the Valentine's Day roses.  Every once in awhile we need that reminder, every once in awhile we need that day to reminds us how Blessed, Thankful, Loved we are.

So whether you clebrate it or not, what harm does it do for you to show love to the people in your life who mean something to you?

I must say I enjoyed seeing middle school and high school boys struggling on the train carrying balloons and stuffed animals. Gotta Love it!

Happy Day of Love and Friendship! Enjoy some great R&B music! :)

I definitely could have added in more tracks but would have been here all day! Little something to get you inspired!

Black History Month Spotlight: Jean-Michel Basquiat

Jean-Michel Basquiat: Graffiti. Artist. Haitian. Puerto Rican. Street Art. Self-taught.

Born in Brooklyn, NY on December 22, 1960 to a Haitian father and a Puerto Rican mother, it was inevitable for Basquiat's diverse background to be the source of inspiration for his artwork.  Basquiat started as a graffiti artist in New York City under the street name of SAMO.  He later sold his artwork on t-shirts and postcards on the street when his painting career took off.  His work became internationally known and he was able to work with famous pop artist Andy Warhol.   He is famous for fusing words, symbols, stick figures and animals in his work.

Basquiat brought the Black and Latino experience into the elite art world.

Basquiat died at the young age of 27

Back 2 Basics celebrates the life of Jean-Michel Basquiat.   Enjoy...

Black History Month Spotlight: Maya Angelou

Today's Spotlight is on Maya Angleou
Little known fact: Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated on Maya Angelou's birthday on April 4th, 1968. Angelou stopped celebrating her birthday for many years afterward, and sent flowers to King's widow every year until Mrs. King's death in 2006.
“You can only become truly accomplished at something you love. Don't make money your goal. Instead, pursue the things you love doing, and then do them so well that people can't take their eyes off you.”

Maya Angelou  was born Marguerite Ann Johnson on April 4th, 1928 in St. Louis, MO.  In 1936 Marguerite Ann Johnson was raped by her mother's boyfriend and became mute after her abuser was killed by her uncle.  She barely spoke for 5 years until she was inspired by a teacher to find her voice again.  As a teen she studied dance and drama in high school after moving back with her mother in San Francisco.  In 1952 she married Tosh Angelos and began a career as a singer and dancer.  A year and a half later she divorced Tosh Angelos and changed her name to Maya Angelou.   It wasn't until the 1960s when she became an editor and a writer.  In the 1970s she began exploring her talents as an actress, director, poet and screenwriter.

The HISTORY of Black History Month...A Little Education

Black Panther Badge: Power to the People
Carter Woodson, the son of former slaves and the first black person to receive a degree from Harvard University was integral in creating what we now call Black History Month.  As co-founder of the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, he understood the importance of recognizing the contributions that black people have made throughout American and World History.
In 1920, with the influence of Carter Woodson, the fraternity of Omega Psi Phi created Negro History and Literature Week, which was later changed to Negro History Week in 1926.  The month of February was selected because it was a way to honor the birth of two prominent individuals who helped to alter the future of Black Americans: Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass.  For those of you who are wondering why we have the shortest month of the year there is the answer to your question.
After the passing of Dr. Woodson in 1950 many cities adopted the celebration of Negro History Week.  After the Civil Right Movement and The Black Power Movement the ASNLH changed Negro History Week to Black History Week.  It was then in 1976 that this week long observance was changed to a month long celebration.
Although February is Black History Month, our culture, people, and contributions need to be celebrated year round!
Here at Back 2 Basics we do just that! We will spend this month taking it Back 2 Basics so stay tuned...
